GRACEVILLE

Graceville emerged in the years after the Civil War. A Confederate veteran named Captain Henry B. Grace, who settled with his family in the area, gave the town its name. In 1902 Graceville was incorporated when it was discovered that the L&N Railroad was extending a line from Georgiana, Alabama to Graceville. For many years cotton was a thriving industry until the boll weevil destroyed the economy. But the bankers and businessmen of Graceville discovered a new crop, peanuts. The peanut industry became so prevalent that Jackson County was once referred to as the largest peanut growing county in the world. Naval stores and lumber industries wwere also important to Graceville.
