Alafia

Alafia began as a Fort Alafia army stockade in 1849. It is one of Hillsboro County’s eariest settlements, dating back to at last 1842 when Antoine Wordehoff, a Prussian immigrant, homesteaded in the area. The military established Fort Alafia as a stockade and supply depot for troops in 1849 to monitor Seminole Indians. After the Civil War started Wordhehoff stayed in the area and began issuing scrip for his general store, he became Alafia’s first postmaster on September 4, 1855.  The post office was discontinued in 1920.
