Alafia
Alafia
Alafia, located on the military road connecting Fort Meade and Tampa, which had originally been a Seminole trail, is one of Hillsborough County’s oldest communities. It dates back to circe 1842 when Prussian immigrants settled in the area, including Antoine Wordehoff. The military, in 1849, established Fort Alafia, a stockade and supply depot, with a garrison of 42 soldiers. Wordehoff was one of the soldiers at Fort Alafia, fought in the Seminole Wars, and later served in the Civil War. Wordehoff remained in the area and established a general store from which he issued scrip and became Alfia’s first postmaster on September 4, 1855. The post office itself remained in operation until 1920.
